Össur, a globally recognized innovator in prosthetics and orthopaedic technologies, launched the Pro-Flex Terra, a new, next-generation prosthetic foot that redefines versatility. It provides the person with limb loss or limb difference with both the softness and flexibility associated with low-active feet and the powerful energy return associated with high-active feet, at a wide range of ambulation speeds and activities.

Pro-Flex Terra includes a patented, pre-tensioned carbon unit that provides the user with increased flexibility, natural movement, and always-on performance. Proprietary pre-load technology means the prosthesis can utilize up to 40 percent of the user’s body weight to pre-load the top blade, reducing the foot compression needed for energy storage and function. As a result, users can experience a greater range of motion while the prosthesis remains in contact with the ground at most angles, including irregular terrain and steep slopes.

“We are pleased to introduce the new Pro-Flex Terra to the world, which is Össur’s most versatile prosthetic foot to date, with extraordinary design elements and a unique combination of features that will benefit prosthetic users whether they are working in an office, hiking with friends, or playing with their children,” said Sveinn Solvason, president and CEO of Embla Medical, Össur’s parent company. “Several of our initial product testers said wearing the new Pro-Flex Terra felt like nothing they had ever experienced before, which was very gratifying. But we are not stopping there. Pro-Flex Terra represents just the latest in Össur’s continuing and unchallenged legacy of innovations that have revolutionized prosthetics, and we are committed to continuing to transform our industry and helping even more people live a life without limitations.”

Pro-Flex Terra’s unique single anchor point with a gliding contact pad can accommodate the minor shifts in weight that naturally occur while a user is standing, providing a “neutral range” rather than a neutral “point” on the prosthesis during midstance. During higher-impact activities, the friction generated by the moving contact pad also delivers increased energy return.

Össur collaborated with prosthetic users during the product development process to ensure the prosthesis’ lifestyle features effectively addressed the issues users’ daily experience. As a result, the fully waterproof Pro-Flex Terra includes a new footshell with easy-to-fasten buttons that allow for quick removal for cleaning or drying and a proprietary tread pattern on the foot’s sole for an improved grip on wet surfaces.

Pro-Flex Terra’s design facilitates multi-axial rotation, enabling better ground adaptation so users experience superior ground compliance as their prosthesis’ point of contact automatically moves whenever they shift their weight from heel to toe.

Pro-Flex Terra also features a pre-compressed foam bumper that provides progressive stiffness across a range of impact levels, a smoother transition during heel-to-toe movements, and increased dampening at higher walking speeds.

Users can customize their Pro-Flex Terra by selecting additional heel wedges that allow for extra stability during vigorous activities and a unique SandalFix accessory that allows them the option of wearing open-heel footwear by securely attaching the heel of the foot cover to the sandal.
