North American Spine Society Names New President

New Jersey board-certified neurosurgeon to lead the global medical organization.

The North American Spine Society (NASS) named William Mitchell, M.D., at its 40th Annual Meeting this past weekend in Denver.

“As a NASS member for the last 21 years, it is an honor to lead this organization as its new president,” Dr. Mitchell said. “Spine care is evolving all the time, and we will continue working hard to advance NASS’ mission of furthering high quality, ethical, and evidence-based spine care. We are committed to meeting health care’s obstacles head on and doing our part to support physicians and patients alike.”

Dr. Mitchell is a board-certified neurosurgeon at his private practice, Neurological & Spinal Specialists, with offices in three New Jersey municipalities: Marlton, Egg Harbor Township, and Edison. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University, his medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, and residency training in neurological surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Dr. Mitchell was awarded the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Spinal Clinical Fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. In addition to NASS, his professional society memberships include the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American Medical Association. He has contributed to the areas of coding, reimbursement, education, and health policy. Additionally, he served as the program chair for NASS’s 2008 Annual Meeting, as the Health Policy co-chair (2010-2012), and Section Development chair (2012-2015).

NASS is a global multidisciplinary medical organization dedicated to fostering the highest quality, ethical, evidence- and value-based spine care by promoting education, research, and advocacy. NASS membership is comprised of spine professionals from several disciplines, including orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, physiatry, radiology, anesthesiology, research and physical therapy.
