Nalu Medical has released a next-generation Therapy Disc—a smaller, lighter, more comfortable version of the external wearable that powers its Nalu micro-IPG.

The company said the new Therapy Disc boosts the patient experience while retaining the system’s unique advantages. Nalu hopes the advancement can make its system an option for more people looking for relief from chronic pain to be treated with peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS).

The Nalu system boasts a small, implanted pulse generator wirelessly powered by an external wearable disc. By keeping the battery outside the body, the system allows a less invasive implant procedure, avoids future battery replacement surgeries, and offers more comfort—particularly for patients targeting nerves in sensitive or mobile areas of the body.

Dr. Eric G. Cornidez, MD, MBA, Managing Partner & Chief Medical Officer, Pain Institute of Southern Arizona, who has been using the new Therapy Disc during its limited release said the Nalu system has consistently shown strong patient acceptance in his practice.

“With the reduced size of the next-generation Therapy Disc, we’re now able to expand its use to more nerve targets, particularly in the upper and lower extremities,” Dr. Cornidez told the press. “In our experience, the new design has improved both comfort and overall patient satisfaction, providing the opportunity to enhance patient care.”

Nalu’s system is supported by what it believes to be one of the largest real-world clinical data sets in PNS, including randomized control trials, real-world clinical evidence, and health-economic data. Earlier this month, the company won Aetna coverage for its PNS therapy.

“This launch strengthens our ongoing mission to expand access and make peripheral nerve stimulation therapy a therapeutic option for a broader patient population,” said Tom West, CEO and President of Nalu Medical. “With our next generation Therapy Disc, more individuals seeking relief from chronic pain have options to be candidates for this clinically proven PNS therapy.”
