Casualties in the Russia-Ukraine war continue to mount as the conflict approaches its three-and-a-half-year mark. Bullets and blasts from both high-velocity and low-velocity missiles are a major contributor to facial combat injuries, according to studies.

Patient-matched medical device developer MedCAD is helping rebuild lives shattered by the violence. The company recently donated 3D-printed titanium facial implants by Dallas oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Jorge Corona. He led a U.S. medical team of facial reconstruction specialists in Kyiv, where he performed advanced, patient-matched implant surgeries on four critically injured Ukrainians.

“These are not just custom implants—they’re hope made tangible,” MedCAD President/CEO Nancy Hairston said. “This mission underscores how American innovation and compassion can directly improve lives, even in the middle of a war zone.”

The patients—including at least two women—suffered massive facial trauma from the ongoing Russian assault. Their injuries required the use of 3D-printed titanium implants to replace lost bone structures. Titanium, known for its strength and biocompatibility, is not rejected by the body and is essential for such complex reconstructions.

MedCAD provided the implants at no cost. The company specializes in designing and manufacturing patient-matched implants for cranial defects, facial reconstruction, and foot/ankle. Using detailed computed tomography (CT) scans sent by Ukrainian doctors, MedCAD engineers developed personalized 3D surgical plans to digitally fabricate the titanium implants for each individual patient.

Dr. Corona hand-carried the implants to Kyiv and led the surgical effort on the ground. “Witnessing these patients regain not only physical form but also dignity and hope is the most rewarding experience of my career,” he stated.
